For the visually impaired

Close cooperation with the European Blind Union ensured that the euro coins are user-friendly for the visually impaired.

  • Different coin shapes, colours and edges: mills, scallops, grooves and indents make it easier to differentiate the values.
  • The weight of each coin is different - the heavier the coin, the higher the value (except for the €1 coin).
  • The thickness of each coin varies according to value – the thicker the coin, the higher the value (except for the €1 and €2 coins).
  • The values are prominently displayed on the common, European face of the coins.

Different coin edges

 

1 and 5 Cent - plain edges

 

2 Cent - groove around the edge

 

10 and 50 Cent - have fine scallops at the edge

 

20 cent - have seven indents at the edge ("Spanish flower")

 

1 Euro - interrupted mills (three sections milled, three sections plain) at the edge

 

2 Euro - embossed letters (different for each country), embedded in mills, all around the edge.

Reorganisation of the euro coins starting from 2007

New guidelines apply to the organization of the euro course coins, which concern both the uniform value side, and the country-specific illustrated pages. The technical specifications of the coins (size of, weight and corrugation) meanwhile remain unchanged.

Change of the common value side

To become fair in the context of the European Union, extension to the East of 2004, a design adjustment of the euro-vallue sides decided over starting from 2007 also the new EU-membercountrys. Instead of the individual eurocountries, the new motivs proves the continent Europe. On the 1 Euro and 2 Eurocoins are allotted besides the state borders, to the 10 Cent, 20 Cent and 50 Cent the gaps between the states. Only the three smallest nominals ones remain unaffected by the changes, although also they show only”old” Europe on the globe.
